Smithy’s Garden …. located at approximately 1,00ft above sea level, close to Fort Frederick on the spice island of Grenada in the West Indies, this Grenadian garden was started in 1954 after Hurricane Janet when Smithy and her young family moved to their new home in Morne Jaloux.  The first few years in the garden were spent blasting boulders and digging out extensive clumps of razor grass to turn the dry forest area into the lush tropical Grenadian garden which was the brainchild of Smithy.  To augment the cost of paying for gardeners, Smithy and two other friends started a flower shop called Trois M, which soon closed its doors, as the sales did not cover the rent for the shop! Smithy continued to sell her flower arrangements from home, to work extensively in her dream garden, to enter and win yearly garden competitions, and to learn how to fertilize and propagate anthurium lilies.  In addition to extensive reading of garden journals, Smithy used one of her many visits to family in New York to attend Ms. Jocelyn’s florist workshop.  Daughter Ann learned the trade on her mother’s knees.  Agnes who worked with Smithy for 25 years, was next to learn and keep the business going 24/7 when Smithy and Anne were away.  Next came granddaughter Claire who at age 11years, won first prize for her first entrant, a wired corsage,  in the Grenada Horticultural Society’s first flower show after a long hiatus. Smithy’s garden continues to be a winning entrant at Grenada’s yearly flower shows.

Smithy’s legacy continues, Anne and her team of gardeners, after Hurricane Ivan, have since planted extensively, extending the garden and opening it to visitors by appointment. Tours with refreshments are conducted by Anne.   Claire’s arranging and decorating skills include certified balloon work in addition to her natural floral flair, and Smithy’s great-granddaughter Kayla at age three, can identify orchids and anthuriums and has started honing her creative skills on the knees of her mum Claire and grandmother Anne.
